Academic Oversight

  • All curriculum and course development is the purview of academic departments
  • New course and major revision proposals are initiated by academic departments and go to EPC and APPC
  • Students taking courses via OL count towards the enrolment numbers of academic departments and the respective School/Faculty.
  • Open Learning Faculty Members (OLFMs) are represented by the TRU Open Learning Faculty Association and report to the Director, Curriculum Development and Delivery and are supported by the Associate Director, Program Delivery (Sarah Langlois) who communicate regularly with Associate Deans.
  • Academic departments set the qualifications for OLFMs and course developers and have voting representation on all hiring committees.

  • Learner-centred and learning-centred design.
  • “Instructor” presence built in to guide students.
  • Mostly self-paced and continuous entry.
  • Designed thoughtfully and carefully by subject matter experts who are highly accomplished teachers and researchers in collaboration with Instructional Designers from the Department of Learning Design and Innovations and the Open Learning editing, copyright, media, and production teams.
  • Increasingly ZTC and built with OERs. 
  • Media-rich, well-edited, intentional design.
  • Built on a foundation of research-informed practice in distance and open learning that draws on OL’s nearly 50 years of experience and expertise in the field.
